In September 1670, a young carpenter named John Wathen set sail from Bristol, England, to begin a new life in colonial Southern Maryland. There he put down roots, raised a family, and became the ancestor of thousands of Wathens throughout the United States. His many descendants have included farmers, doctors, carpenters, distillers, soldiers, priests, nuns, and more.

Wathen’s Adventure: The Genealogy and History of John Wathen of Southern Maryland traces the story of John Wathen and four generations of his descendants, following their migration through Maryland, Kentucky, Indiana, and beyond. Blending careful genealogical research with historical insight, the book provides a fresh look at the Wathen family's long history.
